Meet the Team
Clinical infection and its subsequent prevention, diagnosis and treatment exert influence across all research specialties, age groups and care settings. Clinical infection research studies come under the following themes; Studies of the development and treatment of acute and chronic infectious diseases.
Studies of the prevention, treatment and control of hospital-acquired infections. Prevention of infections by vaccination, particularly acute infectious diseases and studies in microbiology laboratories of infections and clinical infectious diseases including development of new diagnostic tests.

Gillian Johnson's research experience
I have experience in leading and supporting both commercial and non commercial research opportunities across a number of medical specialities, including ageing, dermatology, gastroenterology, infection, liver, neurological and respiratory disorders working collaboratively with our local NHS trusts, universities and stakeholders to increase recruitment to National Institute for Health and Care Research portfolio studies through novel ways of working.
Dr Ashley Price's research experience
I am a consultant in infectious diseases and general internal medicine at Newcastle Hospitals and an honorary clinical lecturer at Newcastle University. Since 2018 I have led the infection theme within the NIHR Newcastle MIC.
I have extensive experience as chief and principal investigator on several clinical studies. These include two influential studies with the NIHR DEC Newcastle. I have strengthened his national clinical research links through his role as medical lead for COVID-19 vaccine in the North East and North Cumbria, the lead for infection within the NIHR Clinical Research Network for North East and Cumbria and co-lead of the analytical performance workstream within the COVID-19 National Diagnostic Research and Evaluation Platform (CONDOR).
