Health & Social Care Research Across North East & North Cumbria.
Liver
Meet the Team
The liver specialty, also called hepatology, oversees research into the diagnosis and management of patients with diseases of the liver, biliary tree and pancreas. Research covers both chronic and acute liver disease, with cross cutting themes across cancer, surgery and gastroenterology.
Although the study into livers is its own therapy area, many study delivery teams have formed close working relationships with medical technology companies and individuals, most specifically with a focus on the technology to assist in liver transplants, as well as genetics research and the links to biomarkers specific to liver and renal diseases.

Gillian Johnson's research experience
I have experience in leading and supporting both commercial and non commercial research opportunities across a number of medical specialities, including ageing, dermatology, gastroenterology, infection, liver, neurological and respiratory disorders working collaboratively with our local NHS trusts, universities and stakeholders to increase recruitment to National Institute for Health and Care Research portfolio studies through novel ways of working.
Dr Steven Masson's research experience
I am a consultant in liver diseases and transplant medicine. I trained in hepatology and liver transplantation in Edinburgh, Newcastle and London before permanently joining the team at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, in 2010. My specialist clinical interests are alcohol-related liver disease, genetic haemochromatosis, cirrhosis and liver transplantation.
I am a core member of the regional operational delivery network (ODN) for hepatitis C treatment. In addition to clinics at the Freeman, I provide a monthly liver transplant outreach clinic at the James Cook University Hospital. I am the consultant lead for the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals alcohol liaison service and have national roles advocating for improved service provision for alcohol-harm.
