Health & Social Care Research Across North East & North Cumbria.
Radiology
Meet the Team
As a diagnostic service, Radiology plays an important part in research, supporting a wide variety of studies from different directorates such as Oncology, Cardiology, Orthopaedics & Paediatrics. Radiologist and Radiographer-led research also plays an important part in research – always looking at ways to improve diagnostic imaging and the patient care pathway.
The NENC Imaging Academy is working in collaboration with the NIHR to promote and raise the profile of research within Radiology. Developing an infrastructure to support and build Radiology-led research and improve research capacity and capability in the region.

Clare Moody's research experience
Hi, I’m Clare and I am the North East & North Cumbria Lead Research Radiographer, also working as the Lead Research Radiographer at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. I have worked as a Radiographer in the North East for 25 years, with the last 13 dedicated to research. I have a BSc in Radiology, PGCert in CT imaging, PGDip in Nuclear Medicine and currently studying a Masters in Clinical Research. Radiology imaging is known for its supporting role in many research studies, but little is known about research performed and led by Radiology staff. My regional role is a fantastic opportunity to educate, advise and support all aspects of Radiology led research. We aim to promote the excellent research that Radiology staff are doing throughout NENC.
Georgia Williams's research experience
Hi, I’m Georgia and I am the North East & North Cumbria Research Project Manager for Radiology. My role is to provide project support to studies across the region, helping to develop a research idea and provide guidance through regulatory approval and sponsorship processes’.
I have worked in Clinical Research since graduating from my Master’s degree and have since set up and delivered a wide portfolio of commercial and non-commercial research. I am here to work with staff to support turning a research idea into a reality!
Simon Lowes's research experience
I am a Consultant Breast Radiologist based at Gateshead Health and hold an honorary contract with Newcastle University. Although nominally 80% clinical and 20% academic, research plays a significant role in my work. As well as having research interests in clinical and laboratory-based studies in breast imaging and breast cancer, I am keen to help strengthen all imaging-based research across the region.
I am currently the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) Imaging Research Lead for the North East and North Cumbria, and the regional School of Radiology Research Lead. Together with Clare Moody, Georgia Williams, and the CRN (during their transition into the Research Delivery Network, RDN), I hope that we can develop a functioning research imaging network across NENC, that allows us to communicate freely, share ideas, challenges, and successful ways of working, so that we can increase research delivery across the region and support our own home-grown research.

In preparation for this event, our team of senior researchers have prepared five short videos on the basics of research and how to get started. After you have registered, these will be released a week at a time in the run up to the event. You will have the opportunity to submit any question you may have ahead of time, or ask it during the session on the day.

5. NIHR Associate Principal Investigator (PI) Scheme: Launching your Research Career event
Are you a Nurse, Midwife or AHP interested in learning more about the Associate PI Scheme. If so, this event is tailored just for you! Discover how you can embark on a rewarding research career and become an Associate Principal Investigator.
What is the Associate Principal Investigator (PI) Scheme?
The Associate PI Scheme is a six month in-work training opportunity, providing practical experience for healthcare professionals starting their research career.
People who would not normally have the opportunity to take part in clinical research in their day-to-day role have the chance to experience what it means to work on and deliver an NIHR portfolio trial under the mentorship of an enthusiastic Local Principal Investigator (PI).
By participating in the Associate PI Scheme, you'll receive formal recognition for your involvement in NIHR Portfolio research studies, endorsed by the NIHR and Royal Colleges.
Agenda Highlights:
- An overview of the Associate PI Scheme - How to register and what’s involved.
- An opportunity to hear about the Scheme from a variety of perspectives.
- Learn about further NIHR learning opportunities, including the Principal Investigator Pipeline Programme (PIPP) for Research Nurses and Research Midwives.
Who can attend the event?
Whilst the event and agenda are primarily aimed at Nurses, Midwives, and AHPs, we do still want to encourage Health and Care professionals from outside these professions to feel welcomed - the event is open to all.
