Health & Social Care Research Across North East & North Cumbria.

Surgery

Meet the Team

In collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons, surgical research covers all disciplines including; breast, cardiothoracic, colorectal, general, head and neck, hepatobiliary, neurosurgery, plastic and hand surgery, transplantation, emergency and trauma surgery, gastrointestinal, urology and vascular surgery.

The surgical specialty in the research portfolio delivers complex interventional trials, including the evaluation of medical devices and techniques for the delivery of patient care, where surgical intervention forms at least one of the study arms.

There are many cross cutting themes between the surgical specialty and cancer, cardio, trauma and emergency and musculoskeletal disorders.

Bob Slight's research experience

I work as a consultant thoracic surgeon at the Freeman Hospital. My research career spans 20 years and I’m also based at the Population Health Sciences Institute, Newcastle University. The research portfolio of my team is broad and includes surgical safety, digital health, artificial intelligence, behavioural change and population health.

Tips for getting involved in surgical research Networks matter, we hope our inaugural North of England Forum for Surgical Research will be a good initial starting point. Decide your objectives, is it more along the lines of clinical trials or developing grass roots ideas. Most importantly it’s a bumpy road, never give up!
