How did you get started in research/what inspired you?

During my BSc and MSc studies in Biomedical Sciences, I always had an interest in Pharmacology, experimental medicine and research. During my MSc studies at Newcastle University, the COVID-19 pandemic hit during my own research project in Vascular Dementia. I always had aspirations to work in the NHS, and it felt like no better time than to start my career during a period where research was more important than ever. It was then that I started my career in clinical research and have not looked back since!

What do you enjoy about research?

Some of my favourite things about working in research are that no two days are the same, and my colleagues who I work with all have a genuine passion for research. The variation in my job, and seeing how important research can be to patients and the public in terms of improving care, experiences and treatment, is so rewarding.

What training and support have you found most valuable in your career?

There are so many training opportunities within research and lots of resources that are readily available to anybody interested in research. I would recommend NIHR Learn, NHS R&D forum, your local Trust’s R&D department and signing up to mailing lists to receive updates and any upcoming training opportunities. My most valuable support during my research career has been shadowing other teams to understand how the different roles work within research.

Which people/organisations did you get in touch with to help you?

Networking is key to enhancing your knowledge and growing your contact base within research. I would recommend reaching out to researchers with similar interests. I find face to face meetings over a coffee are best!
