How did you get started in research?
I have only been involved in research for 1 year. I spent 5 years as a Diagnostic Radiographer in Plain Film X-Ray and MRI. At our trust we are fortunate enough to have a dedicated research radiology team and a job came out. I was inspired to join as I wanted to develop my skills further in imaging as well as delve into research; being part of making improvements and finding out why things are done was really appealing.
What do you enjoy about research?
I really enjoy the autonomy research gives you. There is time and space to read around the subject, plan what you want to research next and you are constantly learning. We also do imaging for big commercial trials which is interesting too as we build a relationship with patients and I find imaging them very methodical as each time we scan it has to be the same for reproducibility. This can be a challenge as no two patients are the same.
What training and support have you found most valuable in your career?
We all have to complete our GCP training which I would recommend to anyone as it is fascinating to learn how research is undertaken but also how research has evolved over the years to ensure that it is undertaken ethically. I am currently on the 4P’s course run by Newcastle upon Tyne’s NMAHP team. This is a great 5 session course which introduces you into research and points you into some really helpful directions about where to get information to start your own research.

Pippa Bird's top 3 tips
1 - Be passionate about what you do
The more you look the more opportunities there are out there for research! It just takes some digging!
You need people around you to support you with ideas and help develop them into a great project. It’s a difficult journey to go alone.
