How did you get started in research/what inspired you?

I applied for my first post in (vascular) research just 18 months after qualifying as a registered nurse. Ever since my undergraduate years, research has been a passion. I constantly ask myself why we do what we do in a specific way and how we can do things better. While I wasn't successful at that particular interview, one of the members of the panel advised me to apply for a clinical post on the vascular ward, which I did. My path was set! During that time, I continued to make as many contacts in the world of research as I could, attending workshops, conferences and applying for research funding on a particular area of patient care. In time to come, I was appointed to the role of a vascular research nurse and thereafter a nurse consultant.

What do you enjoy about research?

The variety of roles that I have held over time and the opportunities to network with a huge range of colleagues from varying organisations. No two days are ever the same. Seeing the impact that a research study can have on individuals is also extremely rewarding.

What training and support have you found most valuable in your career?

Secondment opportunities which have allowed me to work with different areas of the research infrastructure have been invaluable. They have given me time to work with others, and develop new skills and knowledge to take back and share with others.

Which people/organisations did you get in touch with to help you?

Your trust’s research and development office is a definite good place to make connections and understand what is going on within your organisation. I also joined research forums and research nursing groups both within and outside of the organisations that I worked in.
